About this app
Ledger Lantern is a personal budgeting app that never asks for your bank login. You enter transactions manually or scan a receipt with the camera, and the app does the categorization on the device using a small local model. Everything stays in a local database you can export as plain CSV whenever you like. There is no account, no bank aggregation, and no subscription โ which means more typing than a connected app, and that is the explicit trade.
The app is for people who are uneasy handing bank credentials to a third-party aggregator, people whose banks are not supported by aggregators at all, and anyone who wants their financial history in a file they control. Households can share a ledger by exporting and importing, though there is no live multi-device sync; if you want a shared real-time budget, this is the wrong tool.
Quillstone Cooperative distributes through Google Play and F-Droid and does not authorize direct APK mirrors, so APKBrowse serves no direct download here. The cooperative's publisher verification is still in progress, meaning the ownership claim on this listing is unconfirmed and the release details come from public announcements checked against published checksums. A community mirror is linked below for reference only and is never proxied.
Before installing, note the camera permission: it exists solely for receipt capture, images are processed on the device and discarded unless you choose to keep them, and the app functions perfectly well with the permission denied โ you just type more. Version 2.8.0 requires Android 8.0 or newer because the on-device categorization model needs the newer runtime. If you are coming from 2.5.0, the database schema changes on first launch and there is no downgrade path, so export your CSV before updating if you think you might want to go back. The signing key is unchanged across both releases.

Ledger Lantern questions, answered
Is it safe to install Ledger Lantern from an APK?
The cooperative does not authorize direct APK mirrors, so any direct download is unofficial regardless of how legitimate the site looks. For a finance app in particular, stick to Google Play or F-Droid and verify the fingerprint after install.
Does the app connect to my bank?
No, and it cannot โ there is no aggregation service behind it and no credentials to enter. You add transactions manually or by scanning receipts, which is more work than a connected app and is the reason the app has no access to anything it could lose.
Why does a budgeting app request camera access?
Receipt capture is the only use, and the recognition runs on the device rather than on a server. Deny the permission and everything else still works; you will just enter amounts by hand.
Will Ledger Lantern work on my Android version?
Version 2.8.0 needs Android 8.0 (API 26) or newer because the on-device categorization model requires the newer runtime. It ships arm64-v8a and armeabi-v7a binaries and runs on phones and tablets.
How do I roll back to 2.5.0?
The install itself will work after an uninstall since the signing key is stable, but 2.8.0 migrates the database schema on first launch and 2.5.0 cannot read the migrated file. Export a CSV before updating if you want a viable route back.

How to install this safely
How to verify the file you downloaded
Before you install anything, confirm the file is the one described here. On a computer, run shasum -a 256 your-download.apk (macOS or Linux) or certutil -hashfile your-download.apk SHA256 (Windows), then compare the output character-for-character with the SHA-256 on this page. If a single character differs, the file is not the build we recorded โ delete it.
What the signing certificate proves
Every Android app is signed with a private key that only its developer holds. The fingerprint on this page is a hash of the matching public certificate, and it proves continuity rather than identity: it tells you a build came from whoever signed the earlier ones. Android enforces this at install time โ if a package claiming to be com.quillstone.ledgerlantern is signed with a different key, the system will refuse to install it over your existing copy. A fingerprint that changes between releases is worth pausing on, because a repackaged app that has been modified by someone else cannot keep the original signature.
How to roll back to an earlier version
If the current release misbehaves, 2.5.0 is the last build before it. Android will not install an older version code over a newer one, so you must uninstall Ledger Lantern first โ which clears its local data unless you have a backup. Reinstall the older APK only if its signing fingerprint matches the build you already trust, and check the API range: an older release may target an Android version your device has moved past.
Why we list sources instead of hosting everything
The official store channel is almost always the right choice: it updates automatically and carries the publisher's own distribution guarantees. A direct APK is useful when a device has no store access, when a rollout has not reached your region, or when you need a specific version โ and only when the publisher has authorized that copy. APKBrowse does not list pirated, cracked, or unauthorized rebuilds of Ledger Lantern, and a listing is removed when the evidence for it stops holding up.
