About this app

Slate Scholar is a study app designed around intermittent connectivity. Courses download as complete packages โ€” readings, exercises, and spaced-repetition decks โ€” and everything after that runs locally, including scheduling and scoring. Progress syncs when you reconnect, and if you never reconnect, the app keeps working indefinitely. The spaced repetition scheduler is a standard forgetting-curve implementation rather than a proprietary black box, and the review intervals are visible so you can see why a card came up today.

It is built for students on metered or unreliable connections, people studying during commutes, and anyone who has lost work because an app assumed the network was always there. It is not a course marketplace: Quillstone publishes open-licensed material and the app can import decks from standard formats, but there is no store attached. Tablet layouts get a two-pane reader that keeps the exercise visible alongside the text.

Quillstone Cooperative distributes through Google Play and F-Droid, and has publicly stated it does not authorize direct APK mirrors of its apps. The cooperative's publisher verification with APKBrowse is in progress, so the ownership claim on this listing is unconfirmed and we source release information from public announcements. The mirror shown below is unauthorized and currently unavailable; it appears here so that people who encounter the link elsewhere can see what our review found.

Before installing, plan for storage. A full course package can run to several hundred megabytes, and the app downloads them whole rather than streaming โ€” that is the trade being made, and on a 32GB device with a few courses it will bite. Version 4.5.0 requires Android 7.0 or newer, which is unusually generous and deliberate, since the cooperative targets hardware that other apps have abandoned. Both listed versions carry the same signing fingerprint, so a rollback to 4.2.0 installs cleanly, but 4.2.0 stores decks in a format the current build upgrades on first launch and cannot downgrade afterwards.

Slate Scholar questions, answered

Is it safe to install Slate Scholar from an APK?

Quillstone has publicly stated it does not authorize direct APK mirrors, so any file you find outside Google Play or F-Droid is unofficial. APKBrowse serves no direct download for this app and links only to the two channels the cooperative uses.

How do I verify the download is genuine?

Compare the SHA-256 against the hash listed for the version here, which matches the checksum Quillstone publishes with each release announcement. Note that the F-Droid build is signed with the F-Droid key rather than the cooperative's, so its fingerprint will legitimately differ.

Will Slate Scholar work on my Android version?

Version 4.5.0 runs on Android 7.0 (API 24) and newer, which is deliberately older than most current apps support because the cooperative targets low-cost and secondhand hardware. It ships arm64-v8a and armeabi-v7a binaries and works on phones and tablets.

How much storage will courses use?

A full course package is typically 200 to 600 MB because the app downloads readings, exercises, and media in one go rather than streaming them. On a device with limited storage, remove completed courses from the download manager; your progress is kept separately and survives the removal.

How do I roll back to an earlier version?

Uninstall 4.5.0 and install 4.2.0, which is possible because the signing key has not changed. Your decks will not open, though: 4.5.0 upgrades the deck format on first launch and 4.2.0 cannot read the newer format, so export first if the data matters.

How to install this safely

How to verify the file you downloaded

Before you install anything, confirm the file is the one described here. On a computer, run shasum -a 256 your-download.apk (macOS or Linux) or certutil -hashfile your-download.apk SHA256 (Windows), then compare the output character-for-character with the SHA-256 on this page. If a single character differs, the file is not the build we recorded โ€” delete it.

What the signing certificate proves

Every Android app is signed with a private key that only its developer holds. The fingerprint on this page is a hash of the matching public certificate, and it proves continuity rather than identity: it tells you a build came from whoever signed the earlier ones. Android enforces this at install time โ€” if a package claiming to be com.quillstone.slatescholar is signed with a different key, the system will refuse to install it over your existing copy. A fingerprint that changes between releases is worth pausing on, because a repackaged app that has been modified by someone else cannot keep the original signature.

How to roll back to an earlier version

If the current release misbehaves, 4.2.0 is the last build before it. Android will not install an older version code over a newer one, so you must uninstall Slate Scholar first โ€” which clears its local data unless you have a backup. Reinstall the older APK only if its signing fingerprint matches the build you already trust, and check the API range: an older release may target an Android version your device has moved past.

Why we list sources instead of hosting everything

The official store channel is almost always the right choice: it updates automatically and carries the publisher's own distribution guarantees. A direct APK is useful when a device has no store access, when a rollout has not reached your region, or when you need a specific version โ€” and only when the publisher has authorized that copy. APKBrowse does not list pirated, cracked, or unauthorized rebuilds of Slate Scholar, and a listing is removed when the evidence for it stops holding up.
